I decided to do a fresh install of karmic and quite surprised how slick the process was. Before now ive installed gutsy, hardy and jaunty. Karmic is a lot better, the slideshow is very nice. Although the one thing I found weird is how long it took. Booted it from a usb and I was expecting it to take a much shorter time but it took a good 15 minutes to boot the live session. Other than that it was great. I did a fresh install because I didnt want to risk upgrading GRUB because its fraught with danger, plus I wanted to use EXT4.

update: something I didnt notice before, my suspend is working yay

Ive been using karmic since alpha 1 and finally its all coming together. A hot new theme, the software store, ext4 and xsplash are the main highlights. Another improvement is the effective use of package kit. It really bugged me that I had to imput my password to check for updates but thats gone now and you just need to imput your password to install updates. I wont put up any pictures of the new look so people can check it out themselves but one thing I can say is its still a little brown but its a lot darker. Now that karmic is in the freeze before beta its finally got everything I really wanted after jaunty. A complete overhaul of the UI and ext4 everything else was just a bonus. So new additions like slideshow of wallpapers, ubuntu one included by default and all the updates were just the icing on the cake. So congrats in advance for such a great job making karmic the best release yet.

Update: Mistake by me the update manager isnt using package kit its using aptdaemon.

I did a fresh install of ubuntu two days ago because I was having issues with network manager in karmic. I reinstalled from jaunty and then upgraded to karmic. I didn’t install ubuntu one but I have an account and this confused me for a second but then I realised it must have been installed by default.
Personally I find it a little strange because its still in beta and with the amount of ubuntu users I thought it would be karmic+1 before we saw any ubuntu cloud services included in by default. Im glad I was wrong because its a very nice service and makes transferring of files between ubuntu machines very easy.
