My computer is dying :(

Ok my computer is making this really bad sound that means the fan is broken. The sound came and went a few times but its not stopping now. I cant get any work done because I get a headache listening to it. Its a broken fan obviously from the sound but its old anyway and really crap.

Im trying to get things done like changing the interface for updates of the software sources program to the specifications of the design team (which is almost done by the way and is in a branch) and make a quickly vala template (started but not anywhere near done) for this ubuntu release cycle.

Just so people dont think im trying to cod them out of some money heres a video.

Id like to get this computer from zareason. So thats my goal $ 799.00 or € 617 if I cant get that much ill figure something out or just get a different computer for cheaper.

So if you can spare a small bit of money id be really appreciative.

    Replace the fan?
I’m sure you can find parts on eBay, but yeah, that or buying a new computer.

Well the problem is it isnt a good computer in the first place but im looking into every option.

Laptop spare parts. And if they don’t have it in stock you can set up a notification. Hardest part may be that you have to take the laptop apart to find the model number of the fan. From personal experience of doing that on an ancient HP laptop; it’s a royal pain in the you-know-what.

I tried to take apart the laptop to see what was going on and its almost like its glued shut. The spare parts idea came up above already and the simple answer is its crap and old anyway and its speed gets in the way all the time. Its only 1.7 ghz or something.

To be perfectly honest, I think you’re either running too heavy of applications when lighter ones could be used, or you’re being what I call “computer greedy”.

People complain about 1 minute startup times on a modern *nix, when what they get when that minute is at least thousands of times more powerful than what they would have gotten 5-10 years ago, and does it hundreds-to-thousands of times faster.

I don’t need even 1Gb of RAM for all the amazing things my computer can do! I can view/create/serve web sites, create professional-quality documents, view/create video/audio files/streams, write/run programs in virtually any language, write/read/send/serve emails… That’s just things I do or plan to do on a regular basis. There’s _so much more_. It’s INSANE. 8

Granted, I live in the shell, Emacs, and Conkeror, for the most part, and that’s somewhat extreme, but that said, I’m perfectly happy with my netbook, and Atoms are not very powerful, considering their clock speed. Anything above them in power with 1gb of RAM should be “good enough”. Not “HOLY FSCK” fast, but yeah.

I’m not saying “stick with it or you’re a glutton”, but more “you don’t _need_ a faster machine, just want one, which is fine.

The only reason I plan on upgrading my desktop to a faster proc is because I “want” a new mother board. I want free drivers, and my mobo doesn’t support multiple video outs. I’ll just update the proc while I’m at it.
I don’t need two monitors, especially considering the fact that the one I’m using atm is 24″ 1920×1080, which is TREMENDOUS!
        I _want_ to do that.
Any quad-core, 2Gb of RAM and I’ll be _insanely_ happy with the results.
4gb is a likely upgrade, but only because I want to play with virtualisation more.

Is this a perfectly valid reason to upgrade? Yeah! I’m just making a philosophical statement.

Oh I get what you mean but im a developer I do make broken programs have memory leaks and crap a lot that are heavy on a CPU and my laptop has got lots of bangs after being all the way around Ireland and to America. It has had a long life for one of my computers, 3 years is long for me and long for a computer that cost 400 euro at the time.

I have never used 2 monitors and never really saw great benefit in getting them and really I dont care about graphics card performance as long as it can play heroes of newerth im good :)

I can feel your pain. Have similar problem: http://twaud.io/1QS
And the bigger issue is that every summer it becomes so hot that it turns off it self every hour. So every year I am taking it to service for a little cleaning, and afterwards it doesn’t shut down at least.
My advice is: clean the fan or replace it. If the problem persists, than try to buy a new one.
