My thoughts on Games for Linux

I went on a quest to find an awesome game for Ubuntu. It doesnt matter how much it costs I just want an awesome game. So there are some ones that most people know about Heroes of Newerth, Nexuiz, Warsow, OpenArena, Tremulous and a load of id software games.
So we have lots but most of the good ones are first person shooters. So what about massively multiplayer online games? On windows and mac they have Wow and we can run that on wine but it isnt exactly ideal. So I went looking for some good mmorpg games and i found two games that dont look bad Neverwinter Nights and Vendetta Online. Oh and if you count Heroes of Newerth we have 3 good online multiplayer fantasy games and lots of FPS games already available.
The problem is that there isnt enough people using linux yet to justify most companies making games for Linux but its great that id software and a few other nice companies accommodate us.
So what we need is for lucid+1(10.10) we get as many good games in the software center. So commercial or free, proprietary or free software lets make everything available. Lets have some fun :)
EDIT: I got neverwinter nights wrong its not a MMORPG, its just a RPG. Whoops :/

    Also, with Valve porting Steam to OSX and the Source Engine to OpenGL, there is hope it’ll come to Linux someday.
    Some even think it’s coming soon: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODA1Nw
    Wait and see…

    Neverwinter Nights is not an mmorpg. Its also very old

      Well it maybe old but it looks good. You forget that WoW is old too.

    Shane, here is a list of games (with native linux installers) I have running (or not) on Lucid: http://sites.google.com/site/alucidfs/gaming mainly stuff you have covered.

      Well some of what I put in there are available in the repo. I was just doing a commentary on gaming more than covering what games have linux clients.

    I’d definitely add Regnum Online to the list. For those of you who like World of Warcraft, Regnum is something similar. And the developers are always updating and adding new content. With their recent graphics updates over the last few months, Regnum is looking pretty good!

    Hope this isn’t a stupid question, but what about gamepad setup?

    • Shane says:

      Most are plug and play. The wiimote, the xbox controller and the ps3 controller all work from what I remember.

      I heard about spring, Total Annihilation is one of the games of my childhood along with Fallout. Ive never really given spring a good look but its been on my todo list. Im going to make a followup post with a few reviews of the games I try out so ill be sure to add that in.

    Savage2 is great.

    I don’t mean this to be an advertisement of any sort, but…

    I have also seen the need for high-quality games besides First Person Shooters and puzzles on GNU/Linux. I’ve been getting a team together to work on a Free Software 3D Adventure Game in the cartoony style of Mario in which two players cooperatively work together to solve puzzles and fight enemies with the ultimate goal of defeating the evil Dr. Geoff. It’s called Humm and Strumm (sorry about the bad colours on the web page ^_^). You can find some information on our Google Code site, too.

    Anyone wants to help, please contact me. Thanks!

    Cheers,

    Dofus is another MMORPG that works on Linux. Currently the client for most servers is written in Flash, but a new version in Adobe Air is released and all servers may switch to it soon. The performance seems to be worse on Linux than on Windows, but I guess Flash player on Linux is to be blamed.

    I gave up gaming to escape Windows.

    If VALVe ports their games to Ubuntu, I’m going to buy Half Life and Portal pretty quick.

    I would just like to point out two things really quick:

    -Syntensity is a rapidly-growing FOSS gaming platform, and is great. It’s fast, robust, and is powered by the Sauerbraten engine, and the Google V8 Javascript engine. It’s definitely worth looking into, some of the games available on it are incredibly diverse, yet all use the same engine. Currently they implemented the Bullet Physics Library. You can find it at http://www.syntensity.com

    -I’m currently working on porting a ton of 2D adventure games over. They’re not open source, and the runtime is proprietary, but don’t freak out. There are hundreds of independent titles out there that are compatible with the Linux runtime. An issue is currently being resolved about save locations (for the sake of where the binaries are and all that), and I am working on packing up the most popular AGS (Adventure Game Studio) games in a PPA for Ubuntu users to install if they’d like. Currently the PPA is empty, but you can find it here: https://launchpad.net/~iliketowritestuff/+archive/agslinuxgames

    I have played a few commercial games on Ubuntu recently:
    * Machinarium
    * Rainslick: Precipice of darkness
    * World of Goo
    * Penumbra series
    * Savage 2 – I’m seriously addicted to this one
    * Prey demo
    * Enemy Territory Quake Wars demo

    I didn’t buy the last two, because they don’t sell them online to Brazil. I will have to order DVDs from Amazon, probably.

    And I agree that there should be commercial games in software centre.

  17. Unknown GNU/Linux

    Others MMORPGs, Regnum Online and RuneScape. Also there is a lot of Flash Games in sites like Kongregate and Newgrounds.
