Indicator and me menu, lucid looking awesome

Ive been testing out lucid since a little before alpha 1 and all is well from what I can see. What landed recently was the me menu and I have say that its cool.

I love the idea of posting to twitter on the fly from the desktop rather than waiting for Gwibber to load up(which takes a good 20 secs ish on my machine). Oh and the new version of Gwibber from the daily ppa looks awesome.
Some extra things to look forward to is the new indicators, an improved software center, Pitivi and the music store. I cant wait to try out the music store which should land alpha 3(ish) but what songs should I buy…? And will Severed Fifth‘s album be available? (kidding its free go get it if you want) :)

Seriously, will Severed Fifth’s album be available? I think it would be a missed opportunity it Ubuntu One wouldn’t integrate some free music distribution service. Not only would it allow artists giving their work away for free to reach a larger audience, it could also be used in a promotional campaign for other artists.

I mentioned it in the UDS session and what they said was it really depends on the partner they choose but they would prefer to have some free content sharing.

Doesn’t seem that fantastic to me.

Twitter posting looks like it’ll be pointless with too small an input box for larger messages and clumsier in opening a menu compared to simply going to Twitter itself or using a dedicated application.

Also, I find the reversal on separating status and on/off/suspend seems odd and a complete turn around on Marks original design ideas (http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/233). It would be nice to get better consistency in that area.

Well design ideas change its evolution. I think its great to have better desktop-internet services available. The original idea was just for instant messaging clients (pidgin and empathy) but this new one does microblogging and IM clients so it is a step up IMO

Why is there such a huge space between the letters/icons and the left edge of the menu, it looks strange.

Shouldn’t there be at least an icon indicating that the box is for twitter updates? (maybe a faded twitter icon inside the box that disappears when the box is selected?

It posts to multiple accounts (facebook twitter, identi.ca) because of gwibber. The lack of icons is because you should have already set the accounts that it posts to.

What about descriptions, e.g. “Away with description”? That edit box will support that function too?

Cool! Will it have Google Buzz support? I’m not sure they have a complete API yet; when would it have to be finalised by in order to be usable? I’m thinking FeatureFreeze, but I’m not sure…

Google hasnt released the api yet. I asked Ryan about it on twitter and he said it more than likely wont be in lucid so it will more than likely be lucid +1

OMG… The bloat… Happily I have about 6 months off Ubuntu to Arch, and more important, off GNOME to Openbox. Gnome shell was going to kill me…
