Ubuntu Netbook launcher Craziness

I had an insane idea. I thought how about installing the Ubuntu netbook remix launcher and run it inside Gnome-Shell. It turns out that it looks awesome. I love it :)

      You can try it out.
In karmic just run there commands in terminal:
      sudo apt-get install netbook-launcher
      sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
      gnome-shell –replace
      netbook-launcher

The feature we should suggest to Gnome-Shell is obvious and hanging in the air:

Make the application menus in the Activities overview be just like netbook launcher! The current one isn’t even finished yet (slow and not all pieces of the design actually have a function!).

Thanks for this! This is brilliant. Before this, I didn’t even know that gnome-shell existed. :D

Its more than likely going to be the default desktop UI for Gnome 3.0 which is coming out in April.

can you post another photo when you click on activities?

The netbook launcher dissappears when the overview is open.

looks nice, I was trying to do the same, but I get:

    Usage: gnome-shell [options]

after running the 3rd command listed above… any ideas?

Well I compile it from source using jhbuild so I just presumed it was the same way to replace gnome panel.

Thanks Shane, I will try to do the same. I have never done that, but your desktop looks nice and it sounds like it would be a fun project to do… I just googled jhbuild and I think I could probably pull it off. Any tips for me?

The instructions are all on http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell its very easy to do. No real tips for you just have fun and report any bugs you find.

look great, thanks man… the only thing I noticed is that I don’t have an Activities button on my panel, nor a + sign at the bottom right.

      use[ gnome-shell --replace ]

      and to return to compiz

      use[ compiz --replace ]
      and [ gnome-panel ]

I’m not really fond of gnome-shell, but it WOULD look much slicker if it looked like that when you opened the activities section…
