I was asked by Seif Lotfy to take over zeitgeist’s parental control system. I made a wiki page and a project on launchpad. I want to have a beta available for the Lucid UDS (thanks canonical for the sponsorship).
Unlike openDNS its going to use zeitgeist so we will be getting info from the applications directly so we can get info from local applications like totem and online applications like Firefox, Empathy. I want to make it customisable to the user so the parents will decide what level of control will be enforced. I also want it to just work so ill make a generic blacklist for people to add definitions. At the moment it works but it isnt at all friendly.
Here is a video (from Seif) of the concept (note it doesnt show the video on ubuntu planet for some reason so click on the link to the post to view the video)
If anyone wants to help go on to #zeitgeist on freenode.

Well I must commend you for filling a niche and if I may I have a suggestion (don’t know how ‘doable’ it is or if it makes sense).
If you are going to have a system restrict users habits based on various criteria, would it be possible to make it so it is a special type of account (like limited in xp) that is created. That way as your project expands it can become more general purpose and customisable.
I only wish I was a competent software engineer (or even knew how to do it) that is a concept that interest me.
Anyway, I wish you the very best with it, however it is implemented,
Limited accounts are already there. Ill try add an option to set parental control to an account in the users/groups setup but I wont do that till the engine is good
What about a whitelist instead of a blacklist?
ditto!
